What is your favorite scary movie? If it involves a menacing mask covering the face of a psycho serial killer, than you and I can be movie buddies. When the 13th actually falls on a Friday, there is a particular scary masked man that comes to mind. I received a text message from my boyfriend a few days prior to a Friday the 13th asking me to bake something awesome with a Friday the 13th theme for a work party. I immediately accepted the challenge and went on the hunt for some ideas. Of course, I went to my go to Pinterest. There were some amazing ideas as always but I knew I wanted to make a cupcake cake like this guy…
Ok, so this mask may not be exact or scary at all but with short notice and little time, I was proud of this creepy little face.
To make your murderous cupcake cake mask, follow the steps below:
- Bake your favorite cupcakes. The base of this cupcake cake is chocolate but any flavor will do.
- I usually use cake boards for cupcake cakes but I didn’t have any at home so I improvised by recycling a cardboard box and wrapping it in blue wrapping paper.
- Place the cupcakes in the shape of the mask as shown in the picture below. I like to place a smidge of frosting under each cupcake so that they don’t move around on the board.
- Now it’s time to make your nightmares come true. Make your white based buttercream but stay away from cream cheese frosting due to it having a tendency to melt easier than a buttercream. I used vanilla bean buttercream becuase as you all know it’s my favorite. Just look at those beautiful little black specs of deliciousness in the picture below. Anyway, I put the buttercream in a piping bag and cut off about an inch and a half so that I could put the face layer on like so.
- Next you’ll want to smooth the frosting. To smooth, simply use a tall glass and fill up ¾ of the way full with water and heat in the microwave for 2 minutes or so. Take your favorite offset spatula and place in the hot water for a minute, wipe off the water, and begin to smooth the face.
- Are you scared yet? If not it’s probably because it’s just a big white blob. So let’s give him a face! I used the back of my Wilton 1M tip to use as a stencil make the circles on his mask and then placed a little mountain of buttercream to make his nose. I smoothed out his nose just as I did his face and then used black buttercream to make all the “holes” of the mask.
- Where the stencil marks are, use black buttercream to fill in the spots. Then smooth down just like you did for the face and the nose.
- The last step to baking your nightmares to life is to put the red stripes on the mask. I used a knife to make a stencil for me to trace with red buttercream and also smoothed them out using my offset spatula.
As always, after making him for the first time, there are things I will do differently the next time around but that is what baking and challenging yourself is all about. If there is any cupcake cake or any recipe you’d like me to try, please drop me a note and let me know! Jason would not only be a great guest for a Friday the 13th party but also a Halloween event.
- Arrivederci!
